FAQs

What is CSCYPAA?

The Connecticut State Convention for Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous (CSCYPAA) is an annual, 3-day event that features workshops, panels, meetings, and fellowship opportunities for young alcoholics interested in recovery. Learn more about our purpose.

What is the age requirement for CSCYPAA? Am I too old?

There is no age limit or requirement for CSCYPAA. CSCYPAA is an Area 11 event open to people of all ages with a desire to stop drinking, or who want to support those with a desire to stop drinking. We find this language from the ICYPAA (International Convention of Young People in AA) to be helpful…

Young People’s Groups in Alcoholics Anonymous began appearing around 1945 in Los Angeles, Cleveland, and Philadelphia, and now they can be found all across North America. In 1958, a meeting of young AA’s from across the U.S. and Canada started what is now the International Conference of Young People in Alcoholics Anonymous (ICYPAA), and it has met on an annual basis ever since. At the 1960 AA Convention, Bill W. noted that the age of new members was much lower than when he and Dr. Bob founded AA 25 years earlier. In a letter to ICYPAA dated June 15, 1969, Bill wrote “… in recent years I have found nothing for greater inspiration than the knowledge that A.A. of tomorrow will be safe, and certainly magnificent, in the keeping of you who are the younger generation of A.A. today.”

I cannot afford the registration fee. What can I do?

In accordance with the 7th tradition, CSCYPAA is fully self-supporting, and our registration fee helps to cover our expenses for putting on the convention. Registration this year is $35 for the 3 day convention.

In the past, AA Groups have set aside funds to help their members attend Area events such as CSCYPAA. You could ask your group’s GSR (General Service Representative) for more information, or reach out to cscypaa@ct-aa.org if you have further questions.

Do I have to attend all 3 days or stay overnight to attend CSCYPAA?

You do not! Parking is free and we welcome you to come for whatever portion of our programming you’re able to make. The bulk of our programming will be on Saturday, November 29th.

How can I be of service at the convention?

We’ll have lots of opportunities to be of service at CSCYPAA. The best way to let us know you’re able to be of service is to register and indicate that you’re willing to be of service on your registration form. This will allow us to reach out to you prior to the convention and assign you to a service position.

If you want to be of service to CSCYPAA prior to the convention, outreach is the MOST important thing you can help us with! It is our goal that all young people suffering with an alcohol problem in Area 11 (Connecticut) are aware of CSCYPAA. Share our website and flyer far and wide. If you need outreach materials, reach out to cscypaa@ct-aa.org.
